American Specialty Health Awards Scholarship to Dietetics Student
SAN DIEGO (Jan. 31, 2006) – American Specialty Health (ASH), the nation's leading specialty benefits company for complementary and alternative health care, recently announced the winner of its 2005 scholarship for students pursuing careers in dietetics. The award is the first given out in 2006 through an annual scholarship competition administered by ASH subsidiary American Specialty Health Plans of California (ASH Plans).
The scholarship winner is Jamie Piette, a student at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wis. Piette will receive $5,000, which will be applied toward further studies in dietetics.
Criteria for the ASH Plans dietetics scholarship included grade point average, financial need, and participation in various professional activities. Applicants were also required to complete an essay on their studies in complementary health care. Piette submitted an essay titled “How Dietitians Will Help Resolve the Health Care Crisis.”
“The ASH Scholarship Program was developed to recognize academic excellence and reward students who have a unique foresight into the U.S. health care system,” said George DeVries, president, chairman, and chief executive officer of ASH. “We congratulate this year's scholarship winner on advancing the study of dietetics and creating an outstanding paper that addresses the important role registered dietitians play in complementary medicine and the health care industry as a whole.”
Since 2001, students pursuing careers in various aspects of complementary health care have been eligible to apply for scholarships totaling $45,000 annually through the ASH Scholarship Program. Qualifying students are those studying acupuncture, chiropractic, dietetics, massage therapy, or naturopathy at accredited institutions across the country.
